Independence Day

Independence Day is a national holiday, observed on 15 August. The holiday commemorates India’s independence from the British Empire on 15 August 1947. It is one of the three public holidays celebrated nationwide. The other two are the Republic Day (January 26) and Gandhi Jayanti (Mahatma Gandhis Birthday, October 2).

On August 15, Jawaharial Nehru became the first Prime Minister of India. Jawaharial Nehru raised the Indian national flag above the Lagore Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi. It is a tradition now that on Independence Day the Prime Minister hoists the Indian flag on the ramparts of the historical fort and gives his speech while the President of  India address to the nation on the eve of the Independence Day.  Flag hoisting ceremony is followed by 21 gun shots and the Prime Minister’s speech is followed by march past of divisions of the Indian Armed Forces.

Flag hoisting ceremonies and cultural programs take place throughout the country. Schools and colleges organize different cultural events. Parades and pageants showcase scenes from the independence struggle. Indians celebrate the day by displaying the national flag on their attire, bond with family and friends. Lately Independence Day celebrations are expanding to Indian diasporas throughout the world celebrating the Indian Day.
